My classroom will be a space in which all students feel comfortable and welcomed. I greet students by name at the door at the start of every class and shake their hands so that the academic and professional atmosphere is immediately understood.
Classroom rules will be explicitly taught and posted in the classroom early in the year. Responsibility and Respect are the two core values in my classrom. The classroom rules will be taught and posted in the class early in the year. I aim to discipline in the least disruptive way possible. This means using subtle but effective messages, i.e. proximity, calling out their name, and modeling appropriate behavior early on. Sending students to the office is the absolute last resort- because the priority is always to have them learning in the classroom. I think students act to a teacher's expectations, so if you set high standards, while supporting and modeling the appropriate behavior, an effective and welcoming learning environment is cultivated.
My classroom runs on a system of routines and procedures that keep students engaged throughout the day. All students have "monitor" jobs so they feel they are important in the running of the class. They can communicate with hand signals so that learning is not disrupted by the small but unavoidable questions. Students are expected to Track who ever is speaking to show their peers and their teacher respect and to demonstrate active listening. These practices maintain efficiency throughout the day so that students can focus on their content and their learning.
I want to welcome my students into an environment that is conducive to learning. I will consider my own background and experiences as I plan so my lessons will not exclude anyone. By establishing the appropriate rules and consequences and enforcing them fairly, my students will feel accepted and challenged, which will lead them to become confident and successful.
