My goal as a teacher is for students to develop a respect, if not a love, for English. I want my students to leave my class at the end of the year, feeling confident that they can define themselves as readers and writers. I am a strong believer in Universal Design for Learning; appropriate differentiation can ensure that all students are learning and retaining information in a way that works for them. In my classroom, ideas will be shared, written, debated, and discussed in an inclusive environment where all students will feel welcomed.
In the English classroom, I believe a quality curriculum includes a healthy combination of nonfiction and fiction texts. While fiction allows the reader to broaden his/her horizons, nonfiction grounds us, and using them together can help the students and teacher make connections that will lead to critical thinking. Using the new Common Core Standards, this combination is possible!
To be a truly effective teacher, it is important to stay connected with the community in which you teach, the faculty around you, and other educators through online discussion and by attending conferences. In my time as a teacher, I hope to make connections not only with my students, but also with my peers and colleagues who share my passion for education.
Ultimately, I want students to leave my classroom as stronger readers and writers. I also want them to leave feeling like they are more responsible, more respectful, and more equipped to become compassionate citizens of the world.
